Five Minute Friday: Ordinary

Ordinary

The good is often found in the ordinary. The day that makes the bad ones disappear, is not the out-of-this world adventure, but the simplicity in the everyday. Ordinary is a clean house. Ordinary is a meal I can be proud of, lovingly and carefully prepared for the ones I love.

Ordinary is where I find the graces of God. The simple pleasures that make me smile, or sigh with contentment. The moments that remind me why I keep going. That strength is not found in the big events, or the life shattering times. It is found in the quiet moments of the ordinary day.

Ordinary is where I reach the end of my rope, but ordinary is where I find the knot to keep holding on to. Ordinary is the naughty boys and the bad behavior and the wondering where I went wrong in my parenting. But ordinary is the surprising moments of generosity, the kindness of a boy wanting to surprise his mama. Ordinary is what I rail against but also reach to embrace, all rolled into a series of beautiful, forgettable moments.

Ordinary is where I find my peace.

  1. You definitely found the upside of ordinary. Reading this has me hankering for comfort food and cuddling on the couch and all the simple pleasures I love best about my everyday life. Very refreshing! Thank you!

  2. Ann Soutter says:

One of my favorite books, that stays on my bedside table, is “The Gift of an Ordinary Day” http://www.amazon.com/Gift-Ordinary-Day-Mothers-Memoir/dp/B004Y6MY6E. I have found myself thinking of an ordinary day so often….

    • Thanks so much for the recommendation Ann! I checked out the Amazon link. While it looks like the book is centered around a mom at the stage of having teenagers, it still looks like something to read now, before I get to that stage. I’m adding it to my list! :)

  3. Visiting from the Five Minute Friday today. These statements, “Ordinary is where I find the graces of God.” and “Ordinary is where I reach the end of my rope, but ordinary is where I find the knot to keep holding on to. “, I say YES and AMEN!

  4. Those ordinary days are the best. Enjoy them, remember them, and hope for more.
