Muffin Tin Monday: Monkey Business

We like monkeys around our house. My little one has been nicknamed Monkey from his first week at home. He was such a chubby little guy I called him Chunky Monkey and Roo just laughed and laughed. The nickname stuck. So we have had monkey clothes, monkey toys, monkey stuffed animals, monkey books – I’m sure you get the idea.

I realized I had not made a monkey muffin tin. I did make a Curious George muffin tin once, but nothing specifically monkey themed. So I finally put together a monkey themed Muffin Tin this weekend.

In this muffin tin: Banana Roll Up (flour tortilla with PB&J and a banana), banana yogurt with chocolate banana and monkey cookies, banana smoothie (banana, orange juice, strawberries, and ice), banana chips, and fruit snacks.

I had high hopes for this Muffin Tin. After all, my kids love PB&J sandwiches, like bananas well, and I thought the smoothies would be the start of a new healthy treat. Nope. Neither of them liked the banana roll up – my guess is because it was something new and different. Neither of them liked the smoothie (up side to that is I got to drink a lot of smoothie!). Roo did not like the banana chips, although Monkey asked for Roo’s share and then some more. Roo tried to get away with eating his yogurt and fruit snacks and calling it done. I did make him eat some more. He grudgingly took the roll up apart and ate half of it that way. Same with Monkey.

Oh well. I discovered I should not make them the roll ups again. I also discovered Monkey loves banana chips, so I can add that to our snack rotation. And my high hopes for making them smoothies in the morning and even sneaking some veggies into them – completely dashed. Oh well. :)

  1. Looks like a yummy lunch. I would try the smoothies again in another week and see if they like it more. I know I used milk / ice cream rather than ice on the first few smoothies and slowly moved towards more ice and less milk to get them used to the idea.

    • Thanks! That’s a great idea! My kids love those yogurt smoothies, but I hate how much sugar they have in them! Maybe if I make it a little thicker they would like it better. Thanks!

  2. I tried the tortilla rollups before. My 9 year old told me he doesn’t like the consistency of the tortilla- too chewy, he said. Maybe that was it with your kids? Who knows. FYI: I just recently discovered plantain chips. I love them. My husband loves them. My kids love them. They are lightly salted so they actually taste like chips! They are an awesome snack!! Just thought I’d share.

    • I think they were just being stubborn about trying something different! :) They love tortillas when we have tacos or when I make those appetizer roll-ups. Hadn’t heard of the plantain chips – we’ll have to try those! Thanks!

  3. The banana roll ups look good to me! I wonder if my kids would like them? I guess I ll have to try. :)
